Tour of the Seven Churches of Revelation

This route begins where empires once framed the Christian imagination and then crosses into the landscapes addressed in the Book of Revelation itself. From Constantinople’s patriarchal churches and imperial monuments, the journey moves into western Anatolia, where the communities of Ephesus, Laodicea, Philadelphia, Sardis, Thyatira, Pergamon, and Smyrna once heard words of exhortation, warning, and steadfast hope. Along the way, Byzantine and Ottoman Istanbul, the great ruins of Ephesus and Hierapolis, and places preserved by Christian tradition invite a pilgrimage that is at once historical, biblical, and deeply rooted in the geography of early faith.

Day 1

Istanbul – Turkish Breakfast – The Imperial Heart of Byzantium and the Ottomans

BreakfastOvernight: Istanbul
Istanbul · Hagia Sophia
Istanbul · Hagia Sophia

Welcome to Turkey. Upon arrival at Istanbul Airport, you will be met by our representative and transferred to a local restaurant for a traditional Turkish breakfast consisting of cheeses, olives, fresh bread, eggs, seasonal produce, and Turkish tea.

After breakfast, meet your guide and begin in Istanbul’s historic Old City, where the outline of Byzantine Constantinople still shapes the ground beneath the modern city. At the Hippodrome, once the center of public life, imperial ceremony, and public spectacle, the story of the capital opens in a space that gathered rulers, crowds, and civic memory for centuries.

From there, continue to the Blue Mosque, admired for the balance of its domes and the refinement of its interior decoration, before visiting Hagia Sophia, one of the world’s great religious monuments. First built as the principal Christian cathedral of the Byzantine Empire, Hagia Sophia stands at the intersection of Christian devotion, imperial ambition, and later Ottoman history, making it one of the essential places from which to understand the city’s layered sacred past.

At the end of the tour, you will be transferred to your hotel, check in, and enjoy the rest of the evening at leisure. Overnight in Istanbul.

Day 2

Christian Heritage of Constantinople – Fener & Balat

BreakfastOvernight: Istanbul
St. Stephen’s Iron Church
St. Stephen’s Iron Church

After breakfast, meet your guide and set out into the districts where the Christian life of Constantinople endured beyond the empire that first shaped it. Begin at the Ecumenical Patriarchate and the Patriarchal Church of Saint George, the spiritual center of the Eastern Orthodox Christian community worldwide. Here, the visit brings into focus both sacred continuity and historical resilience, as you explore the church, its relics, and the role of the Ecumenical Patriarchate across centuries of Christian history.

Continue through the historic Fener district to the Church of St. Mary of the Mongols, one of the very few Byzantine churches in Istanbul to have remained in continuous use by the Greek Orthodox community. Nearby, see the Phanar Greek Orthodox College, whose commanding presence remains one of the district’s most recognizable landmarks and a reminder of the city’s long Greek Christian heritage.

The walk through Fener and Balat then reveals streets long associated with Christian and Jewish communities, where the urban fabric itself preserves something of old Constantinople’s diversity. Proceed to the Bulgarian Church of Saint Stephen, the Iron Church, an extraordinary 19th-century Orthodox building assembled from prefabricated cast-iron elements and remarkable for both its engineering and ecclesiastical history.

The day continues to the Church of St. Mary of Blachernae, once among the principal centers of Marian devotion in the Byzantine world and an important pilgrimage site in the Christian history of Constantinople. In this final stop, the devotional life of the city comes into especially sharp focus before you are transferred back to your hotel. Overnight in Istanbul.

After breakfast, begin the day at the Spice Bazaar, one of Istanbul’s most animated historic markets, where the commercial life of the city still unfolds in a setting tied to long-established trade routes and daily urban rhythm.

Continue with a Bosphorus Cruise, tracing the waterway that has always made Istanbul both a boundary and a bridge. From the boat, take in panoramic views of the city’s European and Asian shores, its palaces, waterfront mansions, and familiar landmarks, each helping to explain why this strait has been so central to the history of Byzantium, Constantinople, and modern Istanbul. Please note that the Bosphorus tour is operated on a shared public boat.

After the tour, you will be transferred to Istanbul Airport for your domestic flight. Upon arrival at Izmir Airport, meet your driver and continue to Kuşadası by private vehicle. After checking in at the hotel, enjoy the rest of the evening at leisure. Overnight in Kuşadası.

After an early breakfast, meet your guide and begin with a visit to the House of the Virgin Mary, believed according to tradition to be the place where Mary spent the final years of her life. The visit recalls Jesus’ words from the cross as He entrusted His mother to the Apostle John: “Behold your mother” (John 19:26–27).

Continue to the Ancient City of Ephesus, one of the great centers of early Christianity and the first of the Seven Churches mentioned in the Book of Revelation (Revelation 2:1–7). Ephesus was also central to the ministry of the Apostle Paul, who lived and preached here for years (Acts 18–20). Walking its marble streets places the biblical record against a vividly preserved urban setting, with major monuments including the Library of Celsus, the Temple of Hadrian, and the Great Theatre, the latter associated with the events described in Acts 19.

Later, visit the Basilica of Saint John, built over the traditional burial site of the Apostle John. According to early Christian tradition, John lived in the Ephesus region, cared for the Virgin Mary, and continued his ministry here in old age, making this one of the most important commemorative sites linked with the apostolic memory of western Anatolia.

After the visits, continue to Pamukkale and explore the ancient city of Hierapolis, mentioned in the New Testament in connection with the ministry of Epaphras (Colossians 4:13). Here, the journey widens from the Seven Churches themselves to the broader world of early Christian communities in Asia Minor, as you discover the remains of this Greco-Roman and early Christian city and then view the white travertine terraces for which Pamukkale is known. At the end of the tour, you will be transferred to your hotel. Overnight in Pamukkale.

Day 5

Laodicea – Philadelphia – Sardis – Thyatira

Breakfast · Lunch · DinnerOvernight: Pergamon
Church of Laodicea
Church of Laodicea
Sardis · Temple of Artemis (1991)
Sardis · Temple of Artemis (1991)

After an early breakfast, depart Pamukkale and begin at Laodicea, one of the Seven Churches mentioned in the Book of Revelation (Revelation 3:14–22). Prosperous and self-assured in antiquity, Laodicea became the setting for one of Revelation’s most searching admonitions, a message on spiritual lukewarmness and the call to renewed faith. The city is also mentioned by the Apostle Paul in the Epistle to the Colossians (Colossians 4:13–16). As you explore its churches, streets, theaters, and monumental remains, the biblical text can be read against the scale of a city once known for wealth and regional importance.

Continue to Philadelphia, praised in the Book of Revelation as the faithful church that kept Christ’s word and did not deny His name (Revelation 3:7–13). The surviving remains are more limited here, yet the place carries particular weight through the message addressed to its early Christian community, one marked by endurance rather than grandeur.

The journey then leads to Sardis, another of the Seven Churches and the former capital of the ancient Kingdom of Lydia. In Revelation 3:1–6, the church of Sardis is called to wake up and strengthen what remains. The archaeological setting reflects an older and wider significance as well, and your visit includes major remains such as the Temple of Artemis and other monuments that speak to Sardis’s political, religious, and cultural prominence in antiquity.

Then visit Thyatira, mentioned in Revelation 2:18–29. The church here was commended for love, faith, service, and perseverance, while also being warned to remain faithful. Among the archaeological remains of the ancient settlement, the visit draws attention to Thyatira’s commercial life and to the setting in which an early Christian community took shape. At the end of the tour, continue to Pergamon and transfer to your hotel. Overnight in Pergamon.

Day 6

Pergamon – Smyrna

Breakfast · LunchOvernight: Izmir
Pergamon · Ancient theatre
Pergamon · Ancient theatre
Smyrna Agora
Smyrna Agora

After breakfast, begin the day with a visit to Pergamon, known in the Book of Revelation as Pergamon and identified as one of the Seven Churches of Asia Minor. The church was praised for remaining faithful despite persecution, yet was also urged to stand firm against false teachings (Revelation 2:12–17). Explore Pergamon’s impressive Acropolis, the remains of ancient temples, the steep theater, and other monumental structures overlooking the surrounding region.

Continue to Izmir to visit Smyrna, another of the Seven Churches mentioned in the Book of Revelation. The church of Smyrna was commended for faithfulness amid suffering and persecution and encouraged to remain steadfast even in the face of death (Revelation 2:8–11). At the Ancient Agora of Smyrna, one of the most significant surviving parts of the Roman city, the historical setting of that early Christian community becomes more legible, linking the biblical message to the urban world in which believers lived, worked, and worshiped. At the end of the tour, you will be transferred to your hotel. Overnight in Izmir.
