Travel Tips July 10, 2026 9 min read

One week, four world wonders: this classic route through Istanbul, Cappadocia, Ephesus and Pamukkale is the definitive first-timer’s week in Türkiye.

If you have one week and it is your first time in Türkiye, this is the route: three days in Istanbul, two in Cappadocia, and a grand Aegean finale at Ephesus and Pamukkale. Domestic flights of about an hour stitch it all together. Here is the day-by-day plan.

Days 1–3: Istanbul

Day 1 — the icons: Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, the Hippodrome and the Basilica Cistern, finishing with sunset from a Sultanahmet rooftop. Day 2 — palaces and bazaars: Topkapı Palace in the morning (see our palaces guide), then the Grand Bazaar and Spice Bazaar, with the tile-lined Rüstem Paşa Mosque in between. Day 3 — the Bosphorus: morning cruise between two continents, afternoon in Galata and Karaköy, evening meze on the Asian side. More time? Raid our hidden gems list.

Days 4–5: Cappadocia

Fly to Kayseri or Nevşehir (about 1 hr 20 min) and check into a cave hotel in Göreme or Ürgüp. Day 4: Göreme Open-Air Museum’s rock churches, Paşabağı and Devrent valleys, sunset at Red Valley. Day 5: the dawn hot-air balloon flight, then the Derinkuyu underground city and a hike through Ihlara or Pigeon Valley. Evening flight (or next morning) to İzmir.

Day 6: Ephesus & Şirince

From İzmir or Kuşadası, spend the morning walking the marble streets of Ephesus — the Library of Celsus, the Great Theatre, the Terrace Houses — plus the House of the Virgin Mary on the hill above. Wind down over a long lunch and wine tasting in the hillside village of Şirince.

Day 7: Pamukkale

Finish with a day at the white travertine terraces and the ancient spa city of Hierapolis, including a swim among sunken Roman columns in Cleopatra’s Pool — the full plan is in our Pamukkale guide. Fly home from Denizli or İzmir.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is one week enough for Turkey?

Yes — with domestic flights, a week comfortably covers Istanbul, Cappadocia, Ephesus and Pamukkale, the four essentials of a first visit.

How do you travel between Istanbul, Cappadocia and Ephesus?

Domestic flights are the answer: Istanbul–Kayseri/Nevşehir (~80 min) for Cappadocia and Cappadocia–İzmir (~90 min) for Ephesus. Flights are frequent and affordable.

What is the best base in Cappadocia?

Göreme puts you in the heart of the valleys with the most cave hotels; Ürgüp and Uçhisar offer quieter, more boutique stays — all work perfectly for balloon pick-ups.
