The Great Sphinx with a pyramid behind it at Giza

Your Egypt, Your Way: Cairo, a Nile Cruise or the Red Sea?

Egypt Travel November 5, 2026 4 min read

Some journeys begin with a monument you have always wanted to see. Others begin with the wish to slow down. Egypt offers both: Cairo’s great discoveries, the changing scenes of the Nile and days beside the Red Sea. The best starting point is not a checklist, but the kind of holiday you want.

For a first encounter: make Cairo your focus

If standing before the Pyramids is the image that brings you to Egypt, start with Cairo. The three-day Cairo City Break combines Giza, the Sphinx, the Grand Egyptian Museum and time in Khan El Khalili with a first-evening Nile dinner cruise. It is a concentrated introduction across two hotel nights, with one full sightseeing day.

Choose the four-day guided heritage programme when you want Memphis, Saqqara and the Citadel as well. It spreads the principal visits over two days rather than squeezing additional stops into the shorter break. Our Cairo itinerary comparison explains the difference.

For a journey that unfolds: follow the Nile

A Nile cruise makes the route part of the experience. Instead of returning to the same city hotel, your programme connects Aswan, Kom Ombo, Edfu and Luxor with nights on board. The Aswan–Luxor guided cruise runs for three nights; the reverse guided route runs for four.

Choose guided sightseeing if you want the listed monuments and excursions arranged within the package. Choose the flexible version if your priority is the cruise and you would rather select visits separately. Full board describes meals on board, not an automatic entitlement to temple tours. Read our Nile cruise guide before comparing the options.

For a pause rather than a checklist: choose the Red Sea

Hurghada and Sharm El Sheikh offer a different rhythm: three hotel nights, destination airport transfers and time without a fixed cultural itinerary. The leisure versions leave excursions optional. The safari versions add a desert outing with a Bedouin-style dinner and traditional performances.

Make the hotel board basis part of your decision. The listed Hurghada options are soft all inclusive. In Sharm, Comfort is all inclusive and Elegant is half board; the names alone do not tell you which meals are included. Our Red Sea holiday comparison helps you decide.

Combining experiences without rushing the journey

Cairo, a cruise and the coast can be discussed as separate parts of a longer holiday, but the published packages are not one automatically connected circuit. Domestic flights, any additional hotel nights and intercity arrangements need separate planning and confirmation. Share the experiences you value most before choosing dates, so travel days do not quietly consume the time you hoped to spend exploring or relaxing.

For a short trip, choosing one strong theme often creates a more satisfying holiday than adding every destination. Keep cultural discovery, river time or rest at the centre of the brief.

Explore the Egypt tour collection, then send your preferred dates, traveller numbers and room arrangements to our Egypt team. A written quotation will confirm accommodation, availability and the services you choose. International and domestic flights are excluded from these programmes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I combine Cairo with a Nile cruise?

You can request a combined proposal, but the listed packages are separate. Connecting flights, transfers and additional nights must be separately arranged and confirmed.

Do all Egypt packages include sightseeing?

No. Guided programmes include their listed visits; flexible stays and cruises keep excursions separate. Red Sea leisure packages do not include the safari.
