Türkiye is larger than most visitors expect — Istanbul to Antalya is over 700 km — but it is also one of the easiest countries to move around, with a dense network of cheap flights, famously comfortable buses and growing high-speed rail. Choose your weapon.
Domestic Flights: The Distance Killer
For any hop over ~500 km, fly. Turkish Airlines, AJet and SunExpress connect 50+ airports, and Istanbul–Cappadocia, Istanbul–İzmir or Istanbul–Antalya take about an hour, often for the price of a nice dinner if booked ahead. This is the backbone of every efficient itinerary — including our 7-day route.
Intercity Buses: A National Institution
Turkish intercity buses are legendary: reclining seats, personal screens, an attendant serving tea, cake and cologne, and stops at vast roadside terminals. Premium companies run routes between every city, day and night — the overnight bus is a budget traveller’s hotel on wheels. Book seats online a day or two ahead in high season.
Trains, Ferries & City Transport
The YHT high-speed train links Istanbul, Ankara and Konya at up to 250 km/h, and the scenic Eastern Express to Kars is a bucket-list winter journey in itself. Ferries are transport as sightseeing: Istanbul’s commuter boats cross between Europe and Asia for pocket change, and sea buses reach Bursa and the islands. In Istanbul, get an Istanbulkart — one card for metro, tram, funicular, bus and ferry — and use the M11 and M4 metro lines to and from the airports.
Car Hire & Private Transfers
Self-driving shines on the Aegean and Mediterranean coasts and in Cappadocia — roads are modern, scenery superb; note that motorways use electronic HGS toll tags (ask your rental company) and city-centre parking in Istanbul is best avoided altogether.
