The Turkish Hamam: A First-Timer’s Guide to the Bath Ritual

Descended from Roman baths and perfected by the Ottomans, the hamam has been the centre of Turkish social and wellness life for over five centuries. Emerging from your first one — scrubbed, foamed and glowing — you will understand why. Here is the ritual, demystified.

1. Change: you receive a peştemal (traditional cotton wrap), slippers and a locker. Men and women bathe in separate sections or at separate times in traditional hamams.
2. Warm up: you lie on the göbek taşı — the great heated marble platform beneath the star-pierced dome — for 15–20 minutes as the steam opens your pores.
3. The scrub (kese): your attendant (tellak for men, natır for women) scrubs you head to toe with a rough mitt. Watching alarming quantities of grey skin roll away is oddly triumphant.
4. The foam wash: the signature moment — a cloud of olive-oil soap bubbles squeezed from a cloth sack envelops you, followed by a wash and massage.
5. Rinse & rest: hair wash, cool rinse, then tea or şerbet in the lounge, wrapped in fresh towels.

Istanbul’s historic hamams are architectural monuments in their own right: the 16th-century Hürrem Sultan Hamamı between Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque, the vast Çemberlitaş Hamamı (1584, by Mimar Sinan), and the magnificently restored Kılıç Ali Paşa Hamamı in Karaköy. Expect €50–€120 for the classic scrub-and-foam package in a historic bath; neighbourhood hamams cost far less.

• Underwear or swimwear bottoms are worn; the peştemal stays on.
• Go before dinner — you will be gloriously sleepy afterwards.
